Amazon's Project Mercury: A $7 Billion Bet to Beat Walmart at Same-Day Delivery

Amazon is embarking on a massive expansion of its same-day delivery network, with plans to build over 1,000 fulfillment centers by 2031. This ambitious project, codenamed Mercury, aims to close the gap with Walmart in the race for fast, local delivery of everyday essentials.

Amazon is planning an unprecedented expansion of its same-day delivery operations, in a move that could redraw the retail landscape and target a key competitive advantage for Walmart in the market for daily essentials.

According to internal planning documents seen by Business Insider, the initiative - codenamed Project Mercury - aims to grow its network of same-day fulfillment and delivery centers to over 1,000 locations by 2031, up from roughly 85 facilities today. The undertaking would require multi-billion dollar investments and reshape how Americans buy everyday goods like fresh food, paper towels, and cough medicine. Walmart, with its thousands of close-by stores, currently dominates this high-volume, high-frequency market.

But Amazon is betting it can change the game by bringing its inventory much closer to customers through hundreds of new "same-day" fulfillment centers (SSDs) stocking roughly 90,000 of its most popular items
