Israel's Kneses, or Parliament, approved a law to establish a military court for Hamas officers, following the passage of the bill in a second and third reading. The proposed law aims to provide a legal basis for trials of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, following the conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces in October.

ومنتصف يناير الماضي، صادق الكنيست بالقراءة الأولى على مشروع القانون، الذي قدمه النائبان سيمحا روتمان من حزب"الصهيونية الدينية"، ويوليا مالينوفسكي من حزب"إسرائيل بيتنا". وقالت هيئة البث الإسرائيلية الرسمية، إن الكنيست أقر بالقراءتين الثانية والثالثة، القانون، ليصبح قانونا ناجزا. بدورها، أفادت صحيفة"يديعوت أحرونوت" الخاصة، بأن الكنيست أقر القانون بأغلبية 93 عضوا، دون أي معارضين أو ممتنعين عن التصويت. وأكدت الصحيفة أن"هذا القانون سيشكل الأساس القانوني لمحاكمات غير مسبوقة، تعد الأكبر والأهم في إسرائيل منذ محاكمة إيخمان".
يشار إلى أن إسرائيل نجحت في خطف النازي إيخمان في عام 1961، بعد أن ألقي القبض عليه في الأرجنتين، وقامت بإعدامه في العام 1962. وتدعي إسرائيل أن الفلسطينيين الذين اعتقلتهم خلال هجوم 7 أكتوبر 2023 هم من"عناصر النخبة" في حركة حماس، ولم تتم محاكمتهم حتى اليوم. وفي ذلك اليوم، هاجمت"حماس" قواعد عسكرية ومستوطنات بمحاذاة قطاع غزة، فقتلت وأسرت إسرائيليين، ردا على"جرائم الاحتلال اليومية بحق الشعب الفلسطيني ومقدساته، ولاسيما المسجد الأقصى" وفقا للحركة.
أعقب ذلك، إبادة جماعية ارتكبها الجيش الإسرائيلي ضد الفلسطينيين في قطاع غزة على مدار عامين، أسفرت عن أكثر من 72 ألف شهيد و172 ألف جريح فلسطيني، فضلًا عن دمار واسع طال نحو 90 بالمئة من البنى التحتية. والأحد، قال وزير العدل الإسرائيلي ياريف ليفين، إن مشروع القانون سيمنح سلطة كاملة لإصدار أحكام الإعدام، وفي حال صدورها فسيتم تنفيذها، وفق"يديعوت أحرونوت". وبحسب الصحيفة، سيشارك معظم المتهمين في جلسات استماع عبر اتصال مرئي من داخل السجن، كما سيحضرون شخصيا في بعض الجلسات.
ويقبع في سجون إسرائيل أكثر من 9600 أسير فلسطيني، بينهم أطفال ونساء، ويعانون تعذيبا وتجويعا وإهمالا طبيا، مما أدى إلى استشهاد عشرات منهم، وفقا لتقارير حقوقية إسرائيلية وفلسطينية.
